Pub Spy; Swig McGuinness takes in the wild Atlantic views at Shenanigans, Portstewart

THERE are some shenanigans to be had at the weekends, let me tell you.

Nothing untoward, you understand, but a great party atmosphere along the North Coast.

Shenanigans in Portstewart, Co Derry, is a breezy, airy spot with a youthful edge that makes an effort to welcome everyone.

With the cool interior of its Bar made up of giant billiard-pocket booths, a soft colour scheme and counter stretching virtually the length of the room, there is a laid-back feel to the place.

The quality finish to the place really is top spec and the staff, even when they are pushed to the hilt on said weekends, still pull off a magnificent job.

And anyone who enjoys a death stick, or those lapping up the tropical climes of the North Coast (OK, so it's just really for the smokers then) are spoiled with a spectacular Atlantic view from a raised area at the front as the pub is near the highest point of Portstewart Promenade.

However, away from the masses letting off steam on Friday and Saturday, the rest of the week has a number of offerings such as a Monday night pub quiz, an easy-going acoustic evening on Tuesdays and cocktail offers on Thursdays.

Maybe it's the location but it can have a holiday camp atmosphere at times yet it is in the right location for such an effect. It is somewhere to gently unwind and have fun with a general mix of students and locals.

Of course, if you are looking for further shenanigans, there's always Club Havana upstairs

We went here on the off chance as it looked really nice from the outside. We were greeted & shown to a table right away. Immediately the inside felt really welcoming & friendly. The staff were nice & the atmosphere was calm & relaxing with background music playing.

We were informed of the offer on the menu for 2 main courses & bottle of wine for just £20 which we thought was super. The choices on this offer were really good as there was chicken, fish or burgers & seemed to cater for all tastes. You had to buy your side orders separately but they were really cheap only £2. The portions were massive & really did taste awesome! The wine choice was great & we were able to take the bottle home if we didn't drink it all!

Really would recommend this to everyone & definitely go again. There is also a dj in the main bar on Fridays & Saturdays which seemed to be a local attraction for the locals but still seemed to be a really nice place to drink & eat in.

During a recent trip of the Causeway Coastal Route (stunning) we decided to stop along the way for some lunch. We drove to Portstewart, parked up and went in search of some grub. All in all there isn't much in Portstewart by the way of eating places, I'm not sure if this was due to the time of year.

However, hungry and tired of searching for a place to eat we decided to give Shenanigans on the main street a go - I honestly wasn't expecting the lunch we received!

Plenty of options on the menu - the usual burgers, fish, goujons, sandwiches etc. Although there were a few surprise dishes on there too. I had masala monkfish with spiced lentils, cauliflower puree and curry oil - beautiful and for the very reasonable price I wasn't expecting a huge amount of monkfish, but I got three big pieces of monkfish tail. My other half was equally as pleased with his chicken and mushroom pie, with chunky homemade chips.

I would definitely recommend Shenanigans for a cheap lunch on the go! It's not just your average bar food!

One of the best meals we had our recent vacation to Northern Ireland was at this restaurant. We had spend the day hiking at Giant Causeway and when we arrived in Port Stewart we were hungry and looking for a good meal. I had fish pie, made with fresh seafood, and for dessert a very tasty sticky toffee pudding. The fish pie was one of the best I have ever eaten. It was nice to eat in a restaurant that doesn’t bring in premade frozen food. I would definitely recommend Shenanigans if you are looking for excellent food and good value.

Was here for my hen party weekend and the food was gorgeous and they dealt easily with a large party of rowdies!

Could not have been more accomodating and special mention to Leah who handled the booking and had everything organised for us with the minimum of fuss.
Everyone raved about the food and I had the best start to my evening ever

Would highly reccomend for a large group as it is often under such circumstances either the standard of food or service falls down - not here! - when one of our party had a minor quibble with her dish, it was rectified immediatley and with minimum of fuss.

Thanks again Shennanigans and I shall certainly be returning with my new hubbie in the near future :)

Eat here with my wife and daughter something for everyone on the extensive menu.
Quality of the food is excellent, service quick and staff very attentive. The wine list is very reasonably priced for a restaurant and all the wines are available by the glass if you wish not the usual house wine only by the glass as in most restaurants.
Will recommend this place to friends and will be back the next time we stay in the area.

Brilliant food and very good prices. Good choice on menu portions are very large so wish we had give starters a miss as these were also large portions.

Me and my family went on sun sept 11th for a family lunch. What started off as a bit of a disaster with a waitress spilling water over my sister, ended in a delightful lunch. We seemed to be the 1st to arrive which was a little dis-heartening as it was 12.30 but by the time we had eaten, the restaurant was filling up. We received starters free of charge to compensate for the water mis-hap, and all staff seemed to be sincerely making sure we left happy. The food was excellent, well presented and your average wait in any establishment. We sat at a table where you can watch the chefs at work, and waiting on my main course i could see why they had achieved a 5* hygiene rating. Very impressed, knocks socks off rivals in the area.

The service was excellent. Our food was very good and the prices reasonable, coffee prices the cheapest we encountered in Ireland and a good tasting coffee as well.
Photos on the wall are interesting scenes from the area

Brought the wife out for our first wedding anniversary on Saturday night 22nd, and we hadn't booked a table in the restaurant. We normally book as we know we need to due to the popularity of shenanigans but we took a chance and all I have to say is that the gentleman meeting and greeting at the front of house couldn't have been more helpful as he sorted with a great table and helped advise us on what would suit or style of food! And the food could not be faulted! Will return for sure! Keep up the good work!
